GUATEMALA 8
We got addicted to the yummy street food in Panajachel and David was impressed with the engineering of this bike and trailer. They all have to first set up, then pack everything up again each night, take it away and then repeat the process the next day. This guy did the most wonderful BBQ meat or chicken (notice I didn't say steak) I don't know what the meat was but it was tender and delicious!

He was obviously doing well if he could afford this!
Well all good things must come to an end and we had to head back to Guatamala City on another chicken bus, do some shopping and then head back to the steamy Rio Dulce and haul out and hard work!!
There was a scout jamboree happening in Guat City when we were there so the place was humming.

David mentioned that his brother Richard never lead the group in a loin cloth as the scout leader!!! We didn't work out the significance of that.

The palace looked lovely from the outside but it is used for council offices now and you weren't allowed to go in and have a look.

It never ceased to amaze me how much the women could carry on their heads and the men could haul so that they could set up their stalls each day!
In area 10 (Guat City is divided into areas - some safe and some not) they block off this main shopping area to traffic so you can stroll down it safely. Our hotel was just around the corner from here so very convenient. Our worker in Rio told us when we got back, that his brother in law had just been gunned down in Guat city. We don't know the circumstances but we gathered it was being in the wrong place at the wrong time. He had a wife and baby! We felt fine walking around during the day, but made sure we were in our hotel room before dark.
Back in the Rio we only had a week or so before Liam was leaving so we went to the fort with him that he missed when he was here last time.

Epiphytes grow in abundance in this climate.

This fort has seen a few ownership changes in its lifetime!
